Sophomore Slump
We always want to give a precise image of ourselves. Often, is about being wise and strong. Then, what happens if you cry in front of the others? You are weak, stupid, and frustrated. You didn’t manage to control your inner emotions. This is probably what you are going to think. But an underlying truth is unsaid: we all need to cry sometimes. We have to mediate between our efforts and the outcomes. Regarding this deep thematic the 16-year-old American singer Ava Valianti has released a single entitled “Sophomore Slump.” Especially at a young age, we want to feel confident. We want to be seen as winners. Though sometimes, as part of the process of growing and truly understanding ourselves, being sad and feeling lost are contemplated. We think that nothing can go wrong if we put effort into what we love. If we focus and keep concentration to make it work, everything is going to be alright. Yet, it is not always like this, at least at first glance. This fact makes us tremble. We do not understand why. And renders us extremely fragile. Even if we don’t want it, it happens. In nostalgic and sophomore chords, Ava sings: “I feel broken up, and it’s so embarrassing crying in front of you, but I do.” In a contemporaneity that often prefers appearance over substance, it is important to remember that spontaneous emotions as a response to our pain and apathy are rare to find. For this reason, songs such as “Sophomore Slump” are a testament to what really happens in our minds when we feel overwhelmed and embarrassed. It’s ok to be still authentic in a world that decides to shut down as a way to cope with difficulties.
